Perfection is a Myth; You Are Not a Failure!
Do you often find yourself fantasising about the perfect future? The perfect 5-year plan? Or wonder why your life seems to always be so challenging and messy despite all your efforts? So many people on social media appear to have it all, the perfect house, the perfect routine, the perfect everything… yet you feel like no matter what you do challenges and failures just hit you one after another. If this sounds like you then I have good news for you. You are not alone! Perfection is a myth and true growth, achievement, and success comes from mistakes and challenges which you tackle each day.
The key is your mindset; see opportunity rather than failure, imperfection is not a weakness, but rather a powerful strategy for true growth and success.
1.Failure = Growth
Nowadays, everyone tends to fear failure because from the outset of our lives we have been taught to avoid it at all cost. But why? Socially failure is the final judgment, the point of no return but this definition could not be further from the truth. In reality failure is an important stepping stone on your journey, it develops resilience and encourages self-growth. Think about it this way, if you try something for example growing your own tomatoes, and say you harvest them too late, next time you will know better because we all learn from our mistakes. Failure makes us wiser; I personally live by try and error, and over the years I have near enough mastered or at least greatly developed numerous skills from gardening and DIY to joinery and cooking, all through trying, failing, and trying again. The key is not to fall down and give up but rather come out the other side stronger and wiser.
2.Challenges = Opportunity
Challenges are something we all face fairly regularly, from little bumps such as a minor unexpected bill popping up, to those ones that are more like a mountain such as sudden loss of employment, and although they may sometimes feel impossible to over come it is crucial to remember that challenges are like jigsaw puzzles; difficult and frustrating at first but always solvable. And solving them opens opportunities for personal growth and achievement. Difficult situations force you to develop new skills, build resilience, and discover your true strengths and weaknesses, teaching you more about yourself than perfection or comfort ever could. So, next time you are faced with a challenge ask yourself; What is this situation trying to teach me? What new skill can I develop? Is this my opportunity for personal development? Remember challenges are what makes us grow stronger. You may feel that there is nothing positive about losing a job but in fact it’s an opportunity to pursue your dream career and might be just the push you needed.
3.The Right Motivation
The social pressure we all grew up with taught us extrinsic motivation as a default which means that most of us are driven by external rewards such us praise, money, and validation from others. Unfortunately, this kind of motivation can be devastating as it is founded up on perfection which means any stumble ends up perceived as failure rather than a journey. So, adopting a intrinsic motivation is far more advantageous as it comes from within one self and prioritizes self-satisfaction, curiosity and personal interests over external factors and opinions or views of others, allowing you to enjoy every step of your journey and accept that stumbles along the way are just a part of it. The key is to focus on the process not the outcome, celebrating small wins rather than just major milestones and engaging for enjoyment and growth not validation.
4.Think Now Not Then
Do you ever find yourself pulled back from opportunities by mental baggage? Regret? Shame? Asking yourself; what if I fail again? Thoughts like these are the ropes keeping you tied down, preventing you from taking action and enjoying the here and now. The only way to free yourself is to let go of the past and focus on the present. This in no way means forget what you’ve been through but rather release the emotional baggage associated with it, learn and grow from it, and move on without the fear of the future. The key is to understand that the past is in the past and it does not determine your future. It does however make you stronger and wiser so that you can continue to grow in the present. As for the future, no one knows what it holds but being in the present allows you to steer your way into the future you want so, don’t waste your time worried about what will be, instead enjoy the journey now.
Ultimately success is not about the perfect result but rather a journey of knowledge and growth. So, next time you find yourself in a challenging situation remember your life is not a straight line to perfection but a beautiful, messy, and ever-unfolding spiral of growth. The most courageous thing you can do is accept every part of it and fall in love with the process.
